Many people believe that paying cash and avoiding taxes means they get the best deal possible. Unfortunately, this usually means losing out on some critical services and safety nets. Be aware of the following potential dangers:

Workers: When working for cash, most renovators/builders don’t pay Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) fees meaning you could be legally responsible for any on-the-job injury.

Warranties: If a renovator/builder gives you warranty cards, the products will be warranted by the manufacturer but don’t expect after sales service from the renovator.

Legal Action: If a problem arises and you don’t have written documentation (receipts, permits, contracts, etc.) your case will most likely be dismissed.

Quality: Without a contract, one of the first things to suffer is the quality of the workmanship. If a complaint is made, you may never see the renovator again.

Permits: Without permits, you lose the benefit of inspections, may face a stop work order, and may be unable to make an insurance claim if an accident occurs.

For some people, price is always the biggest issue. But when making this decision, it is important that you as a homeowner understand the potential dangers.
