Ben comes from a family with a high technical background, and has been involved in the construction field since the age of four. His first job was sanding cabinets and helping with installations in his father’s workshop (being paid well below the minimum wage!). Since his early start in the business, Ben has accumulated over 19 years of construction experience (with 14 of those years devoted to Linwood Post and Beam construction) and has been involved in more than 60 custom home builds. Ben joined the KLC family in 2011, and has found a true home with a talented team of professionals.

How long have you been working at KLC: 5 years
What’s your favourite thing about working at KLC? No day is the same and I learn something new from my colleagues every single day. There’s a whole lotta knowledge in this group!
Seen anything lately that made you smile? I get a constant source of entertainment from a field of cows that I drive by every day on my way into work. But it also causes me to grapple with going vegan on a daily basis.
Got a favourite quote? “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family” – Mother Teresa, (I think this extends to your work family too).

Do you collect anything? Concert posters.
What do you like most about being a designer at KLC? The ability to create cottages for families that they will make memories in, just like I had growing up.
If you were a crayon, what colour would you be?
Silver…love the metallics!
Seen anything lately that made you smile?
My daughter, Presley, split up her Halloween candy and put it on our bedside tables.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Getting to work with clients who have an emotional connection and motivation behind their project. Interior design can be regarded as a bit “froufrou” at times but when a client comes to you and doesn’t just want a new space because their current one is out of style, but rather wants a space that will better suit their family and their lifestyle, then it becomes incredibly rewarding.
For over a decade, Don’s woodworking career was focused on training mentally challenged adults at A.R.C. Industries to produce quality cedar patio furniture and refinish antiques. He also designed & created unique traditional wooden toys which were exhibited & sold at various art shows far and wide.
Eventually, Don’s woodworking career followed a different path: working for a local contractor on construction projects, specializing in custom trim & finish work, then as a partner with another local craftsman, creating custom cabinetry and a variety of residential and commercial renovation work.
Don eventually became an independent general contractor as owner and president of Don Koppin General Contracting for more than 15 years. As past President of the Haliburton County Homebuilders Association and as a member of the Renovators Council of the OHBA, Don takes advantage of the many opportunities to increase his industry knowledge, skills & resources, particularly about healthy, eco-friendly products, materials and methods. Don is a member of the Lions Club and was the founding catalyst of the Bancroft Sustainable Committee, a group that helped in the planning for the future sustainability of our naturally beautiful community. In 2010, Don was elected a Municipal Councillor in the Town of Bancroft & proudly served one term, helping to make positive changes in the community. Don is proud to be an ongoing participant in and ardent supporter of local events & initiatives, artists and entrepreneurs.
